The partnership between Ashoka Fellow Radwa Rostom from Egypt and Leila Ben Gacem from Tunisia happened under the WISE Collaboration Grant.  The Collaboration Grant aims to elevate the impact led by social entrepreneurs and cultivate cross-regional connections between social innovators in the Ashoka global network.

The Changemakers Collaboration Fund awards up to 5,000 USD to groups of social entrepreneurs from Ashoka's network to support a co-creative project.

In February 2025, HandOver and Malinit joined forces to host the Traditions Revived Workshop, a two-day event that brought together architects, engineers, and heritage enthusiasts to explore innovative approaches to preserving traditional building techniques and revitalizing historic urban spaces. The workshop was proof to the power of collaboration in promoting sustainable development and cultural preservation.

Day 1: HandOver’s Earth Construction Techniques

The first day, led by HandOver, focused on the art and science of earth construction. Attendees were treated to an insightful presentation by Saleem, HandOver’s architect, who delved into the global history and techniques of earth construction, followed by Mahmoud Hussen, site engineer, who showcased HandOver’s impressive portfolio of projects and initiatives.

The highlight of the day was the hands-on practical session, where participants got their hands dirty building rammed earth walls. Divided into small groups, attendees worked together to mix soil, ram it into frameworks, and assemble small enclosures

Day 2: Malinit’s Journey Through the Medina of Tunis

The second day, led by Malinit, shifted focus to the preservation and regeneration of historic urban spaces. Leila Ben-Gacem, co-founder of Malinit, presented the organization’s work in the Medina of Tunis, highlighting their innovative mapping techniques and strategies for preserving the Medina’s rich heritage while promoting social inclusion and a circular economy.

The day continued with a walking tour of the Medina, guided by a local expert. Participants explored the souks, cultural sites, and a community park developed by Malinit, which transformed a former junkyard into a vibrant public space. The tour concluded at the Dar Ben Gacem Hotel, where attendees enjoyed a panoramic view of the Medina, reflecting on the intricate blend of history, culture, and modern innovation they had witnessed throughout the day.

A Collaborative Vision for the Future

The Traditions Revived Workshop was more than just an event, it was a celebration of collaboration, innovation, and the enduring value of traditional knowledge. By combining HandOver’s expertise in earth construction with Malinit’s dedication to urban preservation, the workshop showcased how sustainable practices, and cultural heritage can go hand in hand.
