Impact in Action: WISE Townhall Brings Change to Life
On July 1st, WISE’s mission leapt off the page and into the real world during our Townhall, Impact in Action.
Surrounded by inspiring fellows and changemakers, we dove into what it truly means to create and scale meaningful impact. From an energizing discussion with Dr. Laila Iskandar, Egypt’s former Minister of Environment and Urban Renewal, to an eye-opening tour of the Association for the Protection of the Environment (A.P.E.) in Hay El-Zabaleen, we didn’t just talk about transformation — we saw it, felt it, and learned how it grows.
Scaling Up: Policy and System Change
Dr. Laila’s work has reshaped how Egypt and the world view waste management. By championing the recognition of informal workers as essential environmental service providers, she influenced national policy and global perspectives. One of her most powerful wins: changing the occupation status on national IDs from “unemployed” to “recycling worker,” restoring dignity and affirming the crucial role these workers play in society.
Scaling Deep: Shifting Culture and Mindsets
Before policies could change, perceptions had to shift. Dr. Laila helped reframe the narrative — transforming “garbage collectors” into environmental guardians. Through education, empowerment, and storytelling, she nurtured pride within the community and built societal respect for one of the world’s most efficient informal recycling systems.
Scaling Out: Replicating Community-Driven Models
By supporting A.P.E. and similar grassroots initiatives, Dr. Laila paved the way for their model to be replicated across other communities. Their holistic approach — connecting education, livelihoods, environmental protection, and gender equity — offers a blueprint for sustainable, locally driven change.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Laila Iskandar, the A.P.E. team, and our incredible fellows who joined us. This was more than a Townhall — it was a call to action, reminding us that real change begins when vision meets community.
